The first major portion of chapter 73 he omitted for an unknown reason. But truth be told, I think that studying the TTC is always best with multiple versions on hand, so it would also be cool if the app facilitated that with a few select versions there's already a website ( ) that does that, although the selection is limited.Įither way, I respect your choices and it's your app anyway, I just wanted to provide fair points of consideration as someone who's familiar with a few dozen translations and the original language as well!ītw, you wrote about Mitchells version that "some lines having effectively reversed or unrecognizably tangential meanings compared to the source text", could you maybe point out these places?īased on a sampling glance, at least chapters 50, 59, 61, 67, 68, 70 and 72 are complete or almost complete rewrites that arguably don't transmit the original messages. I consider Wing-tsit Chan's ( ) to be the most accurate translation in terms of language while preserving insightful interpretation choices and somewhat natural English wording (although not as "nice" as the other two). My first choice for a use such as yours would be either Stefan Stenudd ( ) or Gia-fu Feng ( ), both having great interpretative insight and a pleasant style of wording. ![]() As a purely derivative work, it's a nice added perspective, but again, can be argued down in multiple ways in how it represents the chapters and their philosophy. Personally, I don't feel that it's a good work inasmuch it makes people mistake it for a reliable and true translation of the Tao Te Ching. I'm sorry if I will upset the strict of you, but I've added some that rang Taoistic and were meaningful and profund to me. ** Note: In the quotes page there are some quotes by other chinese philosophers than Lao Tzu, but from same or close schools or areas. * If there are quotes you love and want to share so I put them in the app, feel completely free to comment or dm me! Also feel free to send any feedback or ideas. I thought it would be cool to kind of roll yourself some random Tao here and there during the day, whenever you like, and see if it resonates with you, and also to have a quick access to it. It gives you a daily Tao quote (you can set a daily reminder for it),you can also roll random quotes and explore, and you can read the Tao Te Ching and also roll random cahpters. ![]() It's called "Daily & Random Tao", it's free and currently available only for android (Sorry IPhone :(, maybe I'll develop a version for apple too at some point). I hope it could be fun and beneficial for you. So, I've built an app and I'm really excited to share it with you! It's high quality content, I love reading your thoughts about these matters. First I want to say that I love this subreddit. ![]()
